ActiveEdge, automatic boring tool compensation – a reality

Rigibore's micron-accurate ActiveEdge tool compensation system is evolving. The system takes advantage of wireless communication to adjust the cutting diameter of ActiveEdge boring bars by as little as 1 micron. This revolutionary technology is being used by major manufacturing companies to reduce operator intervention and increase consistency of the finished bore size.

Now, a partnership between Rigibore and Renishaw plc has pushed this technology even further. Using highly accurate Renishaw touch probes to measure cut diameters, and Rigibore's ActiveEdge interface unit, automatic tool compensation can now be achieved.

Data from the Renishaw probe is interpreted by compensation macros, supplied by Rigibore, that are run as part of the NC program. The macro makes a decision on whether an adjustment is necessary based on the measured diameter and tolerance values that are passed to it from the NC code.

Tool adjustment can take place in-spindle or in the tool magazine. This allows machining to continue with the next operation in parallel with the adjustment. The ActiveEdge tool's adjustment can then be checked before the next cut is made.

If the tool has reached its upper limit of adjustability, or the insert has worn out, a pre-set sister tool can be selected from the tool magazine and machining can continue uninterrupted. ActiveEdge has been designed so that multiple cutting edges on multiple boring bars within a machine tool can all be adjusted via one ActiveEdge interface unit.
