Active Edge - Automatic
Boring Tool Compensation
|
|
Active
Edge boring tools use wireless technology to perform
micron-accurate, automatic adjustment of the cutting
edge.
Adjustment can be carried out remotely, while the
tool is either in the spindle or the carousel -
eliminating the need for operator intervention.
|
|
The Active Edge system offers unrivalled
productivity gains by using part inspection data to
carry out micron-precise tool adjustment.

The all-new remote boring system offering micron
cutting edge compensation in ‘lights-out’
manufacture
Delivers pioneering ease-of-use by enabling micron
adjustment of single or multiple cutting edges by
wireless link.
The tool comprises an integral control yoke next to
the shank. This houses the replaceable power pack,
wireless hardware and the electronic control
capability for up to 8 Active Edge cartridges
To simplify integration with the manufacturing
process, the Active Edge Interface (AEI), is used.
This handles all wireless communication between the
cell and the tooling.
The schematic below shows how the key components
might be arranged in a typical manufacturing cell
comprising four machines feeding parts through a
single gauging station. Any number of Active Edge
tools can be carried in a single machine carousel. |
 |
|
Active
Edge can also be used on machine tools with integral
gauging hardware. |
 |
|
Automatic Presetting
The AEI can be linked to a presetter. This gives the
presetting equipment direct access to the
compensation function of any Active Edge boring tool. Using RFID scanning capability, the cutting edges on the
tools can be automatically set to size after an
insert change. |
 |
|
Features:
Tool adjustment down to 1 micron
on diameter via wireless link.
Self-contained power source.
Fits to any type of boring bar or shank.
Outstanding repeatability, zero backlash ensured by
constantly applied preload to adjustment mechanism.
Benefits:
Automatic in-process compensation when linked to
gauging station or presetter.
No machine spindle modification required.
Precise compensation of up to 8 cutting edges
without touching the boring tool. |
